La Liga Is Suspended Indefinitely
JAKARTA - La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) agreed to extend the suspension of the 2019-20 season indefinitely.
Spain's top football league, along with most competitions and sporting events around the world, are experiencing delays amid the COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic.
On March 12, La Liga made the decision to postpone the season until at least early April. This was done after the Real Madrid squad was forced to go into quarantine when one of the club's basketball players tested positive for a respiratory disease.
La Liga president Javier Tebas previously said he was confident the season would be over, while he also hoped all European leagues would be completed by June 30, with the Euro 2020 and 2020 Copa America postponed to next year.
However, because Spain is still in a state of emergency and its government is still trying to limit the spread of COVID-19, La Liga and the RFEF agree professional football will only return when the authorities ensure everything does not pose a risk to public health.
"The RFEF and La Liga agree to the suspension of professional football competitions until the competent authorities of the Spanish government and general state administration consider that this can continue and does not pose a risk to health," the RFEF statement said as quoted by Soccerway, Wednesday, March 25.
"Both the RFEF and La Liga would like to show their greatest gratitude to all those who dedicate their best efforts to providing important services for the people of Spain, and we also want to show our sincere feelings for all those who died and the warm welcome from the world of football to all. families who lost loved ones. "
More than 15,000 people have died from COVID-19, with nearly 350,000 cases confirmed worldwide. So far, there have been more than 33,000 cases and more than 2,000 deaths in Spain.
