BMKG Remembers The Potential For Thunderstorms In Sumatra And Kalimantan Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has given an early warning to the public to be vigilant considering that there are 21 provinces in Indonesia that are forecast for heavy rain accompanied by lightning on Wednesday. July 10, 2024.

Quoted from the BMKG website in Jakarta, a province that has the potential to rain with heavy intensity and can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds today, namely Aceh, Bangka Belitung, Banten, Bengkulu, Gorontalo, Jambi, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Lampung, Maluku, North Maluku, Riau, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, shifting to the East, people in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) are reminded to be aware of the potential for strong winds.

Meanwhile, the Papua region is predicted to rain with moderate to heavy intensity, and West Papua heavy rain. The South Sulawesi region is forecasted for moderate to heavy rain.

The BMKG website also mentions that most provincial capitals in Indonesia were hit by light rain this afternoon, namely Bengkulu, Gorontalo, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Tanjung Pinang, Ambon, Ternate, Jayapura City, Manokwari, Pekanbaru, Kendari, and Medan. Meanwhile, Pontianak City is predicted to rain accompanied by lightning.

The cities of Banda Aceh, Serang, Jambi, Bandung, Semarang, Banjarmasin, Tarakan, Bandar Lampung, Mataram, and Mamuju are predicted to be cloudy, while Padang City is thick cloudy during the day.

Several areas of the provincial capital are predicted to be cloudy this afternoon, namely Palembang, Makassar, Kupang, Pangkal Pinang, and Central Jakarta.

The cities of Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar are predicted to be sunny with an average temperature of 23-31 degrees Celsius.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto explained that the potential impact of disasters due to rain in a number of parts of Indonesia that are still high could occur, although actually it has begun to enter the dry season. "The potential for increased rain is triggered by several atmospheric dynamics that are still active in Indonesian territory, namely the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, Rossby Kelvin's equatorial waves, to the cyclonic circulation pattern and La Nina also further strengthen the potential for the formation of the rainy cloud," said Guswanto.
