RI-Japan Strengthens Automotive Industry Cooperation, Realizes Zero Carbon Emissions

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is committed to increasing cooperation in the automotive industry, especially in the development of vehicle electrification and environmentally friendly fuel (biofuel) to realize zero carbon emissions (net zero emissions/NZE).

"The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan have become strategic partners in sustainable cooperation with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality in the automotive industry," said Acting Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika in his official statement, Friday, June 28.

Putu said that the strengthening of the cooperation was realized by the Ministry of Industry and METI Japan in a discussion event of The 5th Automotive Dialogue Indonesia-Japan which was attended by the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), the Indonesian Biofuel Manufacturers Association (Aprobi), the Association of Automotive and Motorcycle Equipment Industries (GIAMM), PT Pertamina and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga in Jakarta, Thursday, June 27.

He added, in strengthening this collaboration, Indonesia is committed to implementing several strategies (multiple pathways approach) to reduce carbon emissions, such as promotion of electrified vehicles (xEVs). Including, Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), as well as Fuel-Cell.

Meanwhile, for the development of biofuels, the Ministry of Industry encourages the use of adaptive flexible fuel vehicles using plant-based fuels.

On the same occasion, the Director General of the Secretariat of the Minister of Trade Policy (Biro Industri Manufacturing), Japan METI Tanaka Kazushige said, to achieve zero carbon emissions, an approach of several strategies is needed at once. Therefore, he supports the implementation of the Biofuel promotion and development strategy carried out by the Ministry of Industry to spur decarbonization.

"Biofuel is also a big concern for Japan and several companies in Japan also have this technology," he said.

With the implementation of The 5th Automotive Dialogue Indonesia-Japan, it is hoped that strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in the automotive sector can be closer, support sustainable industrial growth and accelerate the achievement of carbon targets.
