BMKG: Potential Extreme Weather Still Occurs In West Sumatra In The Next Week

JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati reminded the people of West Sumatra about the potential for extreme weather that is predicted to still occur in the area in the next week.

"In the next week, the potential for extreme weather will still have the potential to occur in West Sumatra. Therefore, the community, especially those in the red zone of floods and landslides, will remain vigilant," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, May 13.

He appealed that if possible, people in the red zone could not be in these vulnerable locations for at least the next week.

He said the local government would have mapped areas that were included in the red zone of floods and landslides. It is important for the government to socialize the potential for extreme weather in the next week.

" Vigilance needs to be increased at night because the potential danger will be greater if it is a disaster at night," he said.

He said that BMKG always provided information on early warning extreme weather before the incident. For example, floods and flash floods on Saturday (11/5) have been given an early warning on May 6, 2024.

"This early warning information is expected to be a reference for the community to carry out daily activities. For example, if it is predicted that heavy rain will rain in one area, people who have needs in the area can be more vigilant, or delay these activities," he said.

Dwikorita said the weather conditions in West Sumatra, especially the western part, were very unique. There is no restriction between the dry season and the rainy season.

This means that rain can occur throughout the year. On the one hand, this is profitable, especially for the agricultural sector. But on the other hand, the potential for floods and landslides can also occur throughout the year.

Moreover, West Sumatra is also often shaken by small earthquakes. In the past month, there have been around 35 earthquakes below Magnitude 3.

"Although the earthquake was not felt by humans, for steep cliffs, it could make the conditions unstable. If it is doused with heavy rain, it could potentially landslide," he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi, said that his party always coordinates with the BMKG in terms of potential and future weather predictions as one of the steps to anticipate disasters.

Now the potential for cold lava flooding is because the eruption of Mount Marapi is still happening and can threaten the safety of people in the red zone.

He hopes that based on BMKG predictions, the community can stop activities in the red zone area as a measure to anticipate the potential impact of cold lava floods.
