Condemns Military Coup, Myanmar Ambassador In London Calls For Release Of Aung San Suu Kyi

JAKARTA - Myanmar's Ambassador to Britain Kyaw Zwar Minn on Monday, February 8 local time, called for the release of his country's detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi and overthrow President Win Myint.

Condemning the coup, Ambassador Kyaw followed a diplomatic 'uprising' against Myanmar's military regime. He said he chose the diplomatic route because the answer to the current crisis was only at the negotiating table.

"We request the release of State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint", he said in a statement published on the embassy's Facebook page, after speaking with British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab and British Minister for Asia and Commonwealth of Nations Nigel Adams.

In the statement, the Myanmar Ambassador also said that the embassy in London, England would remain open to maintain bilateral relations, diplomatic functions, as well as serve Myanmar citizens in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland.

Britain has called for the release of Suu Kyi and other leaders who were ousted in Myanmar's February 1 military coup and is demanding restoration of democracy.

"I commend the courage and patriotism of Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Zwar Minn in calling for the release of Aung Sung Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint and for the 2020 election results to be respected", British Foreign Minister Raab said in a statement.

Last week, the Myanmar embassy in Washington DC also signaled a break with the junta, issuing a statement condemning the deaths of civilians protesting the coup and calling on the authorities to "fully exercise restraint".
