Minister Of Environment And Forestry: Compliance With The Business World In Environmental Management Is Getting Better

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya said the level of compliance in the business world in environmental management has shown an increase in recent years.

"Now, we have to say that the level of compliance in the business world is getting better, much better. Because in 2017 we and the business world were still fighting in court. So, after the tough events 2015-2017, it was much better," said Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti after being met at the 2024 Environmental Control Festival at the Manggala Wanabakti Building, Jakarta, Tuesday, April 23.

He said that his party had also prepared surveillance instruments and ensured the involvement of the business world in managing various environmental aspects. One of them is through the Company Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER).

The program was originally a mechanism for monitoring industries that encouraged the company's adherence to environmental regulations. However, now the program is also encouraging an increase in environmental management performance, a framework for collaboration between the government and the business world to overcome environmental problems and community empowerment.

Environmental management with the involvement of various parties was also increasingly encouraged after several major environmentally-related events, including forest fires and 2.6 million hectares (ha) of land that occurred in 2015.

"In 2015, when the President was in Paris, he also promised internationally that Indonesia would carry out a massive transformation, especially forest and land fires. But, it actually has to do with the environment," he said.

On that occasion, Siti also explained that the turning point for environmental management was the joining of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forestry in 2014. Including, increasing peat management, land restoration to developing an environmental quality monitoring information system.

"What I want to raise to government officials, especially the ranks of the environment, is that (environmental management) cannot be avoided, must think technically and methodically. Because, this environment, right, is a new instrument for developed countries to "press developing countries". The tool or instrument is science and technology," he added.
