Relieve Conflict In Sorong, Polda-TNI AL Cooperates To Conduct Special Investigation

Efforts to resolve conflicts were carried out by the West Papua Regional Police and the Indonesian Navy in response to cases of clashes between Brimob personnel and a number of members of the Indonesian Navy Military Police (Pomal) Lantamal XIV/Sorong. They work together to identify the root of the problem that occurred in Sorong City, Southwest Papua on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

West Papua Police Chief Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir in Sorong, Monday, said that the Commander of the West Papua Police Mobile Brigade Unit, Kanit Propam, would go down to conduct a joint investigation with the Indonesian Navy so that they could get a bright spot over the clashes.

"So Mr. Dansat Brimob and the Head of Propam West Papua Police will step down, we will cooperate with friends from Pomal, Intel Fleet and Intel Lantamal to get a complete picture of the incident," he explained as quoted by Antara, Monday, April 15.

He emphasized that the post-troversy was immediately followed by a complete investigation of the existing functions. The goal is to be able to get a bright spot from the origin of the incident and then to be followed by a harsh sanction against members if proven to be actively involved.

Moreover, he said, the security and public order conditions (Kamtibmas) in Sorong City, Southwest Papua have been safe and conducive after the clashes that occurred at Sorong Port on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

"It's safe, the conditions in Sorong City are safe and under control," he said.

So, he said, in principle this happens at the individual level. That there was a misunderstanding there, it finally had an impact.

"So this is not between units, nothing, this is an individual, like that," he said.

According to him, this investigation will be carried out in a complete and comprehensive manner against clashes between Indonesian Navy personnel (Pomal) and Brimob members on Sunday (14/4/2024).

The Commander of the Fleet Command (Pangkoarmada III) Rear Admiral TNI Hersan deeply regrets the unwanted events that have occurred, because the relationship between the TNI/Polri has been well established so far.

"We continue to support the efforts of the West Papua Police and we will also continue to carry out investigations to resolve this problem," he said.

He also continued to provide full support to the West Papua Police to impose harsh sanctions on members of the National Police who were proven to be wrong in the clashes at Sorong Port.

Previously, there had been clashes between a number of personnel from the Indonesian Navy Military Police (Pomal) Lantamal XIV/Sorong with members of the West Papua Police Mobile Brigade Battalion B Sorong, Sunday (14/4/2024) morning at around 09.30 WIT.

It is strongly suspected that there was a misunderstanding between Brimob members and the Indonesian Navy's Pomal at Sorong Sea Port and then resulted in a fight between fellow officers. As a result, a number of police and Navy personnel were injured.
