Expert: The Goal Of Cybercriminals Is Currently Profits, Not Just Famous
JAKARTA - Slightly different from the past, cybersecurity experts say that cybercriminals are now taking action for profit purposes, or profiting.
"Yes, if in the past the trend was just famous, it would be good. Think I want to be famous, I'm already good and so on. Now I don't care, the important thing is that I have a profit," said Dony Koesmandarian as Territory Manager, Kaspersky Indonesia to VOI some time ago.
According to him, nowadays it is rare for cybercriminals who just want to be famous or just show off their abilities. However, on average, they want to make a profit in the form of money.
"If the ransomware is asked, 'I'm encrypting, after that if you want the data, you pay me, I'll give you the web system later,' if you give it, sometimes you don't give anything, right? " he explained further.
This is also mentioned because many cyber gangs already have large communities. For example, as we know, the LockBit ransomware gang even has its own affiliation.
"So now the trend is profit. For example, you know that some cyber gangs that do it are not one or two people, but the community, or group organizations. Not just one person, but organization. We are an organization, we are attack one bank for example, what for? profit, later we will distribute it, "continued Dony.

This fact also relates to the return of operations from the LockBit gang. "It could be (the community is already big). Yes, because the organization is already big. Maybe 2/3 people are caught, the rest is not yet, the rest is making new ones. Yes, it's called looking for opportunities, right," concluded Dony.
He also added, "The fame is more like a bonus? Now you don't want to be famous, now it's useless to be famous, caught."
