Thursday Rupiah Weakened 1.03 Percent To Rp14,522 Per US Dollar

JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate on Thursday, March 12 was closed lower. The rupiah was helpless in front of the US dollar and closed down 148 points or 1.03 percent to a level of Rp14,522 per US dollar.

Head of Research at Monex Investindo Futures Ariston Tjendra said market concerns were heightened after WHO upgraded the status of corona, and US President Donald Trump imposed a travel ban from Europe to the US.

"Stock indexes fell today. Thailand and Philippines stock indexes fell 10 percent, Indonesia 5 percent. Thus the European stock index fell more than 5 percent," said Ariston to VOI.

The position of the rupiah, which is increasingly weak, is in line with other currencies in the region. The South Korean won and the Philippine peso were the currencies with the deepest weakness after falling 1.05 percent.

The Indian rupee and Malaysian ringgit weakened 0.75 percent and 0.70 percent respectively against the US dollar.

The Japanese yen remains the only currency in Asia that has moved positively against the US dollar after strengthening 0.93 percent.
