On Thursday, Rupiah Was Opened To Weaken 0.19 Percent To Rp14,402 Per US Dollar
JAKARTA - The rupiah opened lower in trading this morning, Thursday 12 March. The rupiah opened lower by 0.19 percent to a level of Rp14,402 per US dollar (US).
Monex Investindo Futures Head Researcher Ariston Tjendra said negative sentiment seemed to return to the financial markets after WHO announced that the status of the COVID-19 outbreak had become a pandemic from the previous epidemic.
"The rupiah could be under pressure today with the potential in the range of Rp14,370-14,500 per US dollar," said Ariston to VOI .
This morning, the rupiah weakened along with the majority of other Asian currencies. The Korean won led the weakening of Asian currencies against the US dollar this morning by weakening 0.33 percent, followed by the Malaysian ringgit which also fell 0.33 percent.
The Philippine peso weakened 0.30 percent, the Taiwan dollar weakened 0.17 percent, the Singapore dollar weakened 0.10 percent, the Thai baht weakened 0.08 percent, the Chinese yuan weakened 0.04 percent, and the Hong Kong dollar weakened 0.02 percent against US dollar.
Meanwhile, only the Indian rupee and Japanese yen strengthened against the US dollar this morning with a gain of 0.60 percent and 0.33 percent, respectively.
