President May Campaign, Commander Affirms TNI Is Neutral In The 2024 Election

TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto emphasized that the TNI remains neutral regardless of the possibility of President Joko Widodo deciding whether to campaign or not.

Agus said that the TNI adheres to the provisions of the legislation, namely the Election Law and the TNI Law which clearly regulates the TNI has no right to vote, is neutral, and does not take sides during general elections.

"The 2017 Election Law states that if we practice politics, we will be subject to criminal acts or reprimands from the unit. We just follow a corridor like that," said the TNI Commander as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 1.

Agus continued that during the election stages, all elements of society, including election organizers, even the TNI itself actively supervised the soldiers. "From each group watching so that there was no suspicion during the voting," he said.

President Joko Widodo, after attending an activity at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, Wednesday (24/1), said that the president as a citizen also has political rights, one of which is the right to campaign.

At that time, President Jokowi answered reporters' questions about the technical rules of the minister who campaigned during the election.

President Jokowi explained that this right is protected and regulated by laws and regulations.

"All of that holds the rules, if the rules are allowed, please, if the rules are not allowed, no, it's clear. Don't let the president not, you can campaign. But whether or not it is done is up to each individual," Jokowi said after witnessing the handover of the 4th unit C-130 J Super Hercules and several other transport planes from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense to the TNI.

However, Jokowi has not yet decided whether to take his political rights or not, during the 2024 election stage

"Yes, it will be seen later," said Jokowi, who was accompanied by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo.
