There Were 38 Disaster Incidents In Early 2024, Tens Of Thousands Of People Affected By Floods And Extreme Weather

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded floods and extreme weather events in the second week of January 2024, having an impact on tens of thousands of people in Indonesia.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in Disaster Briefing said 38 disaster events were recorded in the week 8-14 January 2024.

"For floods, the coverage of the affected residents may be very large, for example in one week 49,000 houses were affected, there were 58,000 people displaced and affected, but specifically for casualties we must be aware of are conditions from landslides," Abdul said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, January 15.

One of the events that caught the attention of BNPB was the landslide that occurred in Subang Regency, West Java, which was a community bathing tourist area. Abdul said landslides could occur very quickly, so it was necessary to be vigilant for managers and tourists who visited the location.

"This is what we really have to prepare for public vigilance, because these landslide incidents occur very quickly," he said.

Extreme weather incidents for a week, according to Abdul, have damaged the roofs of people's homes a lot. However, what is of concern if the material carried, such as roofs, billboards, billboards, or large trees, can injure the surrounding community.

Abdul said that this condition needs to be watched out for, considering that the rainy season will still arrive at least at the end of February.
