Cases Of Sexual Violence Against Children Increase 54 Percent Throughout 2023

JAKARTA - Throughout 2023, the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) noted that there were 3,547 complaints of child cases in Indonesia. This figure has increased by 30 percent compared to the previous year.

The complaints of violence against children are recorded through online and offline services. The most case reports are related to sexual violence.

According to Komnas PA records, there were 958 cases of physical violence and an increase of 27 percent. There were 674 cases of psychological violence or an increase of 19 percent. There were 1,915 cases of sexual violence which experienced an increase of 54 percent.

Acting General Chairperson of the National Commission for Child Protection, Lia Latifah, said the increase in cases was 30% compared to last year.

"The first case that dominates is sexual violence, there is a 54% increase, physical violence is 27% and psychological violence is 19%," Lia told reporters, Thursday, December 28.

Of these cases of violence against children, many occur in the nearest environment, namely at home, educational institutions and the child's social environment.

In fact, the perpetrator is the closest person to the child, such as biological parents, uncles, teachers and step parents.

"The case of violence against children in the world of education is still happening. We are conducting educational activities to schools, the community. We went directly. Of the approximately 120 schools we visited, 16,760 children became victims of bullying. The victim's child was pornographic content as many as 9,721 people," he said.

In addition, cases of violence against children occur due to various backgrounds and several factors. The first comes from the family due to economic factors.

Communication with partner is not good and factors cannot understand how to care for and educate their children.

"Based on the scene in the family environment, there are 35%, 30% schools, 23% social environment and 12% of cases of violence against children are not mentioned. There needs to be mutual awareness between parents, communities, teachers and government concerns," he said.
