Bank Employees Reject Military Coup, Disrupted Banking Services in Myanmar

JAKARTA - Employees of private banks across Myanmar have fulfilled calls to join forces in demonstrations as well as civil disobedience to oppose the Myanmar military coup that toppled the civilian government on February 1.

Last week, several national private banks already existed that supported national acts of disobedience. However, this week the number is increasing and many bank branches in Myanmar are closed. The result is quite pronounced in banking services and financial transactions.

It is believed that the joining of private banks will have a real effect on national disobedience. Because the bank holds the key to the economy.

Veteran democracy activist U Min Ko Naing, a leader of the 1988 uprising, said on his Facebook page that this was the most important week for the civil disobedience movement, as the key role financial institutions played in the action.

"Banks are in particular in the most important place for the success of national disobedience", he said, launching The Irrawaddy.

The Yangon County Administrative Council is reportedly planning to provide security for the banks and help them maintain their operations. However, because the employees joined the mass rally, many banks were closed.

An employee of the private bank KBZ Bank in Yangon said the banks had to close because their employees took to the streets protesting the coup.

"All of our bank branches are closed. Even though it's closed, the money can be withdrawn via an ATM", he said.
