After Erik Lamela's first chance was secured by goalkeeper Robin Olsen, Tottenham were able to open the scoring in the third minute with Davison Sanchez's close-range header following a corner from Son Heung-min.
Tottenham's superiority was immediately subjected to a tough test when Sanchez blocked Richarlison's shot and Ben Godfrey's follow-up shot was countered by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Then in the 19th minute, Lloris reacted carefully again to ward off Dominic Calvert-Lewin's close range opportunity to hit the ball into the post and only produce a corner.
