Real Madrid Seizes Second Position After Beating Getafe 2-0

JAKARTA - Real Madrid won second place in the Spanish League standings. This result was obtained after Los Blancos won the postponed match of the first week against Getafe by a score of 2-0 at the Alfredo Stadium in Stefano, Madrid, Spain, Tuesday local time (Wednesday WIB).

The victory, which was supported by goals from Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy, means Los Blancos are now collecting 46 points and displacing Barcelona (43) from the second place while cutting the gap to five points behind Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Getafe, who have lost three defeats in four winless streaks, are stuck in 13th with 24 points, Antara noted on the official Spanish League website.

Real Madrid appeared to be pressing from the start and almost opened the scoring when the game was only five minutes old, but Casemiro's good chance of grabbing a gagged ball sent it over the bar.

Real Madrid got another chance in the 32nd minute, but Raphael Varane's shot was off the mark and five minutes later Luka Modric's shot finished Marcelo's pass was still able to be cleared by goalkeeper David Soria with his foot.

The zero scores lasted until halftime and four minutes into the second half Soria made another save when he brushed off Benzema's cross.

The deadlock finally broke in the 60th minute when Benzema was able to beat Erick Cabaco to head Vinicius Junior's cross into the visitors' goal.

Six minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead when Mendy pushed into the box to complete Marcelo's through ball.

Getafe was kept in motion throughout the match and only fired one shot attempt, even then it didn't meet the target, so they should leave the match empty-handed.

The teams will then return to action for Week 23 of La Liga on Sunday, February 14 when Real Madrid host Valencia and Getafe play their home clash against Real Sociedad.
