Strictly Speaking, Pope Francis Opposes Military Leaders In Myanmar And Declares Solidarity For The People
JAKARTA - Pope Francis also speaks out following the military coup that took place in Myanmar. He declared firmly against the military leaders in Myanmar.
This was expressed by Pope Francis during a speech on Sunday, February 7 in St. Peter's Square, as reported by Reuters via Antara. The Pope also expressed solidarity with the people and asked leaders to serve the common good.
"With deep concern," said the Pope, who visited Myanmar in 2017.
Tens of thousands of people rallied across Myanmar on Sunday to denounce the February 1 coup and demand the release of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in the biggest protests since the 2007 Saffron Revolution that helped spawn democratic reforms.
The military coup in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has also been criticized by world leaders and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The Myanmar military canceled the election results won by Aung San Suu Kyi on the grounds that there was fraud and arrested the Nobel Peace Prize laureate on the grounds that Suu Kyi had violated the law by illegally importing handy talkies.
US President Joe Biden - while addressing the section on the coup in Myanmar - said that there is no doubt that in a democratic system, the military cannot overturn the results of the general elections.
