Extreme Rainfall Floods The Old City Of Semarang

JAKARTA - The Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basoeki Hadimoeljono said that the flood that hit the Old City of Semarang area Central Java was due to high rainfall which was already in the extreme category.

"Rainfall data is considered extreme. From hydrological calculations, the return period is every 50 years", he said during the monitoring in the Old City Area and a number of flood locations in Semarang City, reported by Antara, Saturday, February 6.

According to him, the drainage in the Old City Area which has been completely revitalized has been designed to prevent flooding.

However, he said, three water pumps have been operated to pump water to the Semarang River.

The cause of flooding in other areas in the city of Semarang, he continued, in addition to extreme rainfall is also caused by high tides.

He said the role of the water pump in dealing with Semarang floods was quite decisive.

In addition, according to Basoeki Hadimoeljono, the efforts to revitalize rivers in the capital city of Central Java are also being carried out.

As reported previously, a number of areas in Semarang City were hit by floods due to the rain that flushed from Friday, February 5 to Saturday, February 6.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Semarang City reported that floods hit various points in 10 sub-districts in the city.
