Jokowi Affirms Government Prepares Social Media-Based E-Commerce Rules

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that the government will soon prepare regulations related to the social media-based e-commerce business. According to him, the regulation is being finalized by the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag).

This was conveyed by Jokowi in his statement after reviewing the handling of the Regional Road Inpres (IJD) in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, on Saturday, September 23.

"This has just been prepared, that's right, across ministries and this has just been finalized at the Ministry of Trade," he said, quoted from the Palace press release.

Jokowi emphasized that this must be regulated immediately because it can have an impact on Indonesia's micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and economic activity in the market.

"Because we know it has an effect on MSMEs, on production in small businesses, micro businesses, and also on the market. There is a market, in some markets it has begun to decline due to attacks," he said.

He added that the regulations under design would regulate social media and trading or economic platforms.

"He should be social media, not the media economy, that will only be resolved to be regulated immediately," added Jokowi.

Previously reported, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (Kemenkop UKM) is targeting the revision of the Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 50 of 2020 regarding business provisions through electronic systems to be issued soon.

Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (Menkop UKM) Teten Masduki said the revision of the policy was being attempted to be published this week.

"Yes, yes (likely out in the next week)," said Teten at Tanah Abang Market, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 19.

Teten said the policy revision policy was currently under discussion at the Palace.
