Last year, the Recording Academy announced several changes to the awards process, notably for the "General Field" category - record of the year, album of the year, song of the year and best new artist - where the number of nominations increased from five to eight.

The Recording Academy also claims to have made a greater effort this year to diversify its polling body by reaching women and people of color specifically for new memberships. Meanwhile, old members are required to re-qualify based on their recent performance.

Grammys are chosen by around 13 thousand members of the Recording Academy, which consists of artists, songwriters, producers and sound engineers. More than 21,000 records were submitted to take part in this year's Grammy assessments. As for the 2020 awards, music must have been released between October 1, 2018 and August 31, 2019 to be eligible.

In the 61st edition which was held last February 10, High On Fire received a Grammy award in the "Best Metal Performance" category for Electric Messiah, the title track of the 2018 album release. Whoever is selected next year, the award will still be awarded in the pre-ceremony broadcast.
