MUI Encourages Conflict Resolution And Coup In Myanmar To Engage Rohingya Muslims

JAKARTA - The head of the MUI's Commission on Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Bunyan Saptomo, agrees with the Indonesian government's firm stance on the military coup against Aung Aan Suu Kyi's government in Myanmar.

"MUI, as the representative of Indonesian Muslims, supports the statement of the Indonesian government on February 1, 2021, which expresses its concern over the political situation in Myanmar," Bunyan said to reporters.

MUI, emphasized Bunyan, hopes that the problems in Myanmar can be resolved by means of dialogue, including with the Rohingya Muslim minority there. As a result of the deteriorating political situation in Myanmar, hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have fled.

"According to various media reports, there are currently more than 700 thousand Muslims who were forced to flee to Bangladesh and various countries, including Indonesia," he said.

Bunyan said the MUI called on the authorities in Myanmar to implement the UN resolution to protect all minority groups, including the Muslim minority.

"And ensuring the trial of the perpetrators of human rights violations against the Muslim Rohingya minority," he said.

The MUI, he said, also called on the authorities in Myanmar to follow up on the International Court of Justice decision in January 2020 which ordered Myanmar to prevent possible genocide against its Muslim minority from continuing.
