Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council Suspects The Thud In Malang Was Because Of Lightning
MALANG - The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) Malang Geophysics Station stated that the loud thud heard by some residents of Malang Raya, East Java came from lightning activity.
Head of the Geophysical Climatology Agency for Meteorology, Geophysics Station of Malang, Ma'muri said that during the rainy season, there are many rain cloud formations that can cause lightning.
"So far, the provisional suspicion (thumping sound) leads to thunderstorm activity", Ma'muri said, quoted by Antara, Thursday, February 4.
He explained that the thud sound that heard by some residents of Malang Raya on Tuesday, February 2 that night, certainly did not originate from activities inside the earth, but from outside.
According to Ma'muri, The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council of Malang did not record any shock or earthquake activity at the time of the thud sound occurred which was heard partially by residents of Malang Raya. Seismographs owned by The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council of Malang did not record any spikes in activity from the ground.
"For activity from within the earth, it will be recorded in a seismograph. Our sensors did not record it, so the temporary suspicion comes from lightning activity", said Ma'muri.
Ma'muri added. the explosion that is thought to have come from the lightning activity, is still a provisional guess. His party is still coordinating with related parties regarding the source of the voices heard by some of the residents.
According to Ma'muri, if the public still hears the thuds during the day, his party will still conduct a study related to the sound. Because the sound of the thuds has many causes such as earthquake activity or lightning.
There are three types of lightning that occur in nature. First, the lightning that appears in the cloud, then the cloud meeting which causes the jump of electrons and gives rise to lightning, as well as lightning from cloud to earth.
"For the most dangerous thing is lightning from cloud to earth. Those three things are related to lightning activity. the sound of a bang only occurs at the top, so the sound can be spread everywhere", said Ma'muri.
Ma'muri asked the public to remain calm in response to the sound of the thuds. However, it is hoped that Indonesia can remain vigilant because currently, Indonesia's territory is entering the rainy season with high rainfall.
"So far, it is safe, but we are trying to always be vigilant, especially in the rainy season", said Ma'muri.
Based on the records of The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council of Malang, continued Ma'muri, the sound of loud thuds had been heard in several regions in Indonesia, such as in Lampung, South Sumatra, Buleleng Bali, and DKI Jakarta.
"For in Lampung, it was due to a falling meteor. Meanwhile in Jakarta, it was indeed lightning. There were many causes. In Malang, we cannot confirm yet, but it is a temporary suspicion that leads to lightning activity", said Ma'muri.
