Myanmar Leader Aung San Suu Kyi And President Win Myint Military Arrested
JAKARTA - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party have been detained in the early-morning raids, National League for Democracy (NLD) Party spokesman Myo Nyunt said.
Apart from Suu Kyi, Myo Nyunt said President Win Myint and other leaders had also been "taken" in the early hours of the morning.
"I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law," he said, adding that he was also expected to be detained.
Telephone lines to Naypyitaw, the capital, were out of reach in the early hours of Monday.
This incident followed several days of tension between the civilian government and the military. This tension could potentially trigger a coup after the military accused election fraud.
An NLD lawmaker, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisals, said one of those detained was Han Thar Myint, a member of the party's central executive committee.
