Capitol Raid Leave Domestic Terrorist Threat To US
JAKARTA - The United States (US) is facing an increasing threat of domestic terrorism from people who are dissatisfied with the results of the November 2020 presidential election. This was announced by the Department of Homeland Security, Wednesday, January 27.
The warning comes after a raid on the US Capitol Building on January 6 by supporters of former US President Donald Trump. As a result of the incident, five people died.
"Information shows that some ideologically motivated violent extremists with objections to the exercise of government authority and the transition of the president, as well as other complaints fueled by false narratives, can continue to mobilize to incite or commit violence," the report said.
There is no reliable information about any specific plot related to terrorism. However, the growing threat across the United States (US) is likely to persist for weeks, the department said.
The DHS report says domestic extremists, who can be violent, are motivated by a variety of issues, including anger over the COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 election results and the use of police force.
The report also cited "longstanding racial and ethnic tensions including resistance to immigration" as driving violent attacks at home.
