JAKARTA - The arrival of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to Indonesia is becoming a public conversation. The reason is, he brought millions of dollars to this country.
In the TikTok Southeast Asia Impact Forum Report 2023 event, Chew announced that he would invest 12.2 million US dollars (Rp182 billion). However, what is the purpose of the funds?

"In Southeast Asia, more than 325 million people access TikTok every month and 15 million businesses also become users of this platform. We have a big role in expanding the various economic opportunities, education, and community development in this region and around the world," Chew said.
3. Embrace Indonesian Officials
TikTok will also partner with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), the Women's Resources Development Center Association (PPSW), the Social Business Platform (PLUS), and Telkom to launch TikTok Jalin Nusantara. This initiative will build internet connectivity in community centers in nine villages in East Nusa Tenggara and North Sumatra.
TikTok Jalin Nusantara will provide training programs in these villages, as well as in five creative centers in the main tourism and creative economy destinations and five Telkom IndigoHubs.
In addition, digital and financial literacy training will also be provided to communities, and essential digital skills modules such as content creation, e-commerce, as well as digital marketing, to support them in participating in the digital economy.

4. Bring the ASEAN Foundation Social Enterprise Development Program
The program aims to assist 20 social businesses led by the younger generation in 10 ASEAN countries by providing capacity building, mentoring, facilitation to markets, and initial funding of up to US$320,000 to 20 social businesses led by the younger generation in the region.
The selected registrants will be asked to submit innovative projects that play a role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that cover various issues, ranging from quality education and gender equality, to clean and affordable energy, and sustainable cities.
5. Present TikTok Shop Graduate Development Program
The 24-month job training program aims to introduce talented candidates with the e-commerce industry. Through rotation in various TikTok divisions, participants will study different aspects in the e-commerce industry, starting from interacting with sellers and running a campaign to build a strong network with well-known brands and creators.
TikTok stated that this program will be aimed at all Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.
6. TikTok Admits It Doesn't Take Advantage Of The Election
Still at the same event, during a press conference, Naw emphasized that its platform was free from General Election (Pemilu) advertisements, and promised to keep it safe from hate speech and misinformation.
Chew stated that it had created an Election Center by increasing resources to dispel all kinds of false information.
"The Election Center is aimed at identifying and removing hate speech, dangerous misinformation, as well as maintaining freedom of expression so that people can express themselves. Now at the same time, as a platform, our mission is to inspire creativity," said Chew.
Cheat admitted, TikTok is indeed a forum for exploration and discussion, however, he emphasized that its platform has not yet received Election or political-based advertisements.
"We know we are an important platform for expression and discussion but at the same time, we don't want to take advantage of, one of the electoral cycles. So as a policy issue globally, we don't take political advertising, as a platform," said Chew.
"So there is a lot of work we do but, what we care about is the integrity of the platform," he added.
7. Facts About Chew's Children Not Playing TikTok
This 40-year-old man admitted that his son, now under the age of 13, did not use his social media.
"My son is under 13 years old. In the United States (US), we have a policy that children under 13 should not use TikTok and we are very proud of the product," said Chew.
"So when my kids were in the US, he didn't use it, I'm very happy they used that experience. But, outside the US, right now we don't have experience under 13 years old," he added.
Cheat explained, in this policy, the platform embraces third-party child safety experts to review every content on TikTok.
"It's very safe. It's very important that, you know, we identify users under 13 who use TikTok, (and if there are users) we remove them from the platform", Chew concluded.
