Ofcom, Becomes A Victim Of Data Theft Through Attacks On MOVEit File Transfer Tools
JAKARTA - On Monday, June 12, the United Kingdom communications regulator, Ofcom, announced that it was one of the organizations affected by the data theft attack centered on a popular file transfer tool called MOVEIT.
"In the attack, a limited amount of information about several companies we are regulating - including some confidential information - along with personal data from 412 Ofcom employees, has been downloaded," the supervisory agency said in a statement.
Last week, tens of thousands of British Airways employees, the Boots pharmacy chain, and the BBC were among those experiencing personal data disclosure as a result of the breach, the companies said.
Ofcom stated that they immediately took action to prevent further use of MOVEit services and implement recommended security measures.
A limited amount of Ofcom data was downloaded from the MOVEit server during the violation, not directly from the Ofcom system, a regulatory spokesperson said in an email.
MOVEIT is a popular file transfer tool used to securely and encryptedly move and share files between users. MOVEIT is developed by software company Globalscape and provides a claimed safe, measurable, and manageable solution to transfer sensitive files.
This tool is designed to meet the company's security and data compliance needs, by offering features such as end-to-end encryption, strong authentication, access management, and complete trail audits. MOVEit also ensures data security during file transfer processes using secure protocols such as SFTP (SSH Transfer Protocol Files), FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS), and HTTPS.
In addition, MOVEit provides flexibility in setting user access permits, file transfer schedules, and notifications. Users can easily set authorization based on role and responsibility, set allowed file size constraints, and set a complex file transfer workflow.
Using MOVEIT, companies can ensure that files sent via their networks remain protected and confidential. This is very important in avoiding data security breaches, maintaining regulatory compliance, and protecting sensitive information such as personal data, financial information, or confidential business data.
MOVEit file transfer tools have become the choice of many organizations in various sectors, including financial companies, legal companies, the government, and the health sector, because of their ability to provide safe, fast, and reliable file transfer solutions. But with the leak, now MOVEIT has a lot of questions about its capabilities.
