Netflix AS Experiences Daily Registration Surge After Ban On Sharing Passwords
JAKARTA - The addition of Netflix daily subscribers in the United States (US) jumped in the first few days after the company's crackdown on account password sharing took effect on May 23. This can be seen from the data of research firm Antenna.
News about the ban on various accounts made the company's shares rise 2.3% to 418.92 US dollars in early trading.
Netflix estimates that more than 100 million households have shared their login credentials with people outside their homes. With this new rule, users in the US can add members outside their homes for an additional USD 8 per month.
This calculation seems successful as the company recorded nearly 100,000 daily registrations both on May 26 and May 27, according to Antenna.
Netflix, which has expanded its crackdown on more than 100 other countries, has yet to respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The video streaming company looks at the four biggest days of US user acquisition after changes to this rule came into force in the 4.5 years since Antenna covered the company.
The recent spike also surpassed the levels seen during the initial COVID-19 lockdown in the US in March and April 2020, according to Antenna, which collects data from third parties tracking online purchase receipts, credit, debit and banking data details with permission.
