Indonesia-America Agree To Focus On Building Resilience Against Extremism

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government and the United States government focus on building community resilience in facing extremism in Southeast Asia through the implementation of 3rd ASEAN-US Regional Workshop on Preventing and Countering Violence Extreme (P/CVE). "This is the third time, where SOMTC Indonesia and the Government of the United States are co-hosts in ASEAN-US Workshop on P/CVE," said Head of BNPT RI Komjen Pol Rycko Amelza Dahniel, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday 6 June. SOMTC is ASEAN Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crime or ASEAN State Senior Official Meeting on Cross-Border Crimes. Ryan said that the two previous workshops had been carried out well, through the identification of approaches and practices both in building national strategies and policies. "Including the development of the National Action Plan for Prevention and Combating Violent Extremism Based on Terrorism," said Rycko. National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT RI) which is the chairman of the senior group of officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as co-host with the United States Government implementing 3rd ASEAN-US Regional Workshop on Preventing and Countering Violence Extreme: Community Resilience in ASEAN which was held on June 6-7, 2023. This annual meeting was attended by around 80 participants from ASEAN member countries, representatives from partners, experts, academics, international organizations, and organizations civil society. Ryan said that the meeting between Indonesia and the United States Government had contributed to the development of national strategies and policies in preventing P/CVE. Head of BNPT RI said that this meeting discussed a number of important issues related to P/CVE, including exchanging information on developments in global and regional terrorism, the current situation of ASEAN member countries, youth and women's perspectives in strengthening community resilience, early response, and partnership in response to the propaganda of violent extremism or Early Warning Early Response (EWER), and other online challenges. In line with the Head of BNPT RI, the Mission Director of Regional Development for Asia USAID, Dr. Steven Olive conveyed the importance of the involvement of many parties in building community resilience in dealing with violent extremism groups. "Therefore, this year's workshop raises the theme of community resilience, to improve the ability of the community in "Anticipating, adapting, surviving, and recovering quickly together," he said.

This meeting also resulted in a number of recommendations to be implemented jointly by ASEAN member countries, the United States Government, partners and donor institutions, especially in increasing the resilience or immunity of the community, especially women and the younger generation against P/CVE. In the future, all participants will take part in the 3rd Bali Work Plan Multi-Sectoral Task Force (MTF) Meeting and the 3rd ASEAN Partners Meeting for the Implementation of the Bali Work Plan (2019 2025) on 8-9 June 2023.
