In Aceh, More Wives Are Suing For Divorce From Their Husbands Throughout 2020

JAKARTA - The Aceh Provincial Sharia Court stated that the divorce rate in all regions of Aceh Province reached 6,090 cases throughout 2020. Most divorce suits are filed by wives against their husbands.

Junior Registrar of the Aceh Sharia Court, Abdul Latif, said that when compared to 2019, this figure had increased but was not significant.

"So the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected the increase in the divorce rate in Aceh," he explained in Banda Aceh as quoted by Antara, Thursday, January 21.

Of the 6,090 divorce cases, there were 4,532 cases for legal divorce or the way a wife filed for divorce against her husband, then 1,558 cases for divorce by husband to wife.

Meanwhile, in 2019, he continued, the divorce rate in Tanah Rencong was 6,048 cases, including 1,555 divorce cases and 4,493 divorce cases. Only a few cases increased in 2020 which are still normal, the same as in previous years.

"So during 2020 the cases we received throughout Aceh were 5,003 cases for contested divorce and 1,694 cases for divorce for divorce. Among them we have decided, some have been completed in mediation, there are also cases that are still ongoing this year, "he said.

Latif said the regions with the highest number of divorces over the past year were North Aceh District with 553 cases for divorce and 156 divorce divorces, then Aceh Tamiang with 386 cases for divorce and 105 for divorce.

According to him, disputes and quarrels are the most dominant factors triggering divorce in Aceh. After that, only one factor leaves one party, the economic factor, then the factor of domestic violence (KDRT).

"Even though people outside often mention the economic factors that cause divorce, it's not. Or early marriage, that is also not true, so the most dominant thing is constant quarrels and fights, "he said.

Latif advised the public to be more patient in living a married life. When there are problems in the household ark, then you should not immediately file for divorce in court.

“Patience in the household is important. Who doesn't have problems in the household, I think everything is there, especially those who are just married, must be more patient. Coaching in the villages is also important for our young generation, ”he said.

In addition to divorce cases, said Latif, Sharia Courts throughout Aceh have also decided 3,146 cases of marriage marriage, 879 cases of marriage dispenization, 774 cases of determining heirs, 21 cases of polygamy permit and a number of other cases.
