Moeldoko Is Optimistic That Indonesia Has Global EV Industry Levy Power
JAKARTA - Presidential Chief of Staff Dr. Moeldoko expressed his optimism for the fast-growing electric vehicle industry in Indonesia and is expected to have leverage globally. He conveyed this at the opening of the 2023 Periclindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) electric vehicle exhibition at JiExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, Wednesday 17 May.
According to the Presidential Chief of Staff who is also the General Chair of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), at the 42nd ASEAN Summit meeting in Labuan Bajo last week, the leaders of ASEAN countries agreed on the need to build an ecosystem that supports EV developments in Southeast Asia.
"Especially, Indonesia has resources that support the sustainability and development of the electric vehicle industry," said Moeldoko.
He added that the five ASEAN countries, namely the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, agreed to develop electric batteries for future interests and the agreement will continue through concrete actions to develop joint research.

"This shows that Indonesia is a leverage factor for the development of electric cars in the world. Indonesia's massive EV [Electric Vehicle] development efforts are carried out when it holds the chairmanship of ASEAN. For this reason, I hope that entrepreneurs, investors, policy holders, don't hesitate that EVs are future cars for the benefit of the world that are getting cleaner and for the sustainability of our children and grandchildren," said Moeldoko.
PEVS 2023 was attended by around 50 actors in the electric vehicle industry. This electric vehicle exhibition will last until May 21 at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta.
In addition, the development of electric vehicles will indirectly support development in other sectors. The reason is, currently, the state budget has been disbursed a lot for fuel oil subsidies. When electric vehicles are widely used, it is hoped that the allocation of the state budget can be shifted to the development of health, education, and other sectors.
"Regarding the subsidy of electric vehicles, the government will evaluate how this policy can run effectively. Some of them are related to differences in incentives and subsidies, mechanisms for providing subsidies and incentives, and others, will be evaluated later," concluded Moeldoko.
