BMKG: Beware Of Peak Rainy Season January-February

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for extreme weather, the peak of the rainy season is expected to occur in January to February 2021.

"People are urged to remain alert to potential extreme weather and are asked to always 'update' weather information from BMKG information channels," said BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, January 20.

In addition, when there is an extreme weather phenomenon "water spout" or tornado, people are also advised to be careful not to approach the area of the incident in order to avoid worse risks.

Moreover, the whirlwind phenomenon has just occurred in the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir Wonogiri on Wednesday, 16.00 WIB.

He said Wonogori Regency during January to February is still in the peak period of the rainy season.

Therefore, the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder as well as strong winds and even tornadoes still need to be watched out for in that period.

Guswanto explained that the "water spout" phenomenon is formed from the Cumulonimbus (Cb) cloud system. However, not all Cb clouds can cause this phenomenon depending on the conditions of atmospheric lability.

"There are certain conditions, such as when the atmospheric lability conditions that exceed a certain threshold indicate the air is very unstable," he said.
