JAKARTA - The phenomenon of a whirlwind or waterspout occurred in the Gajah Mungkur Reservoir, Wonogiri, Central Java. The video of the whirlwind was also viral on social media.
Based on the analysis of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the waterspout phenomenon is formed from a cumulonimbus (CB) cloud system. The presence of CB clouds can also indicate the potential for heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

"During the months of January-February, Wonogori is still in the peak period of the rainy season, so the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds can, under certain conditions, lead to potential waterspouts," Deputy Meteorology Guswanto said in his statement, Wednesday , January 20.
Guswanto explained, the characteristics of the waterspout phenomenon are local. So that the whirlwind incident in Gajah Mungkur Reservoir, Wonogiri will only occur in a short period.
"Generally, the duration is about 10 minutes. It occurs more often in the afternoon or evening, and sometimes it is late at night and is less likely to happen again in the same place in the near future," he explained.
Although the waterspout phenomenon occurs in a short time. BMKG appealed to the public to be careful and not try to get close, given the risk that worse might occur.
During the peak period of the rainy season from January to February, the public is urged to remain alert to potential extreme weather and are advised to always update weather information from BMKG information channels, "he concluded.
