JAKARTA - A very high tornado appeared this afternoon in the Gajah Mungkur reservoir, Wonogiri, Central Java.

This whirlwind video has been widely shared on social media. It happened at around 15:45 WIB, Wednesday, January 20.

So how do tornadoes occur? Head of the Data and Information Section of the Climatology Station of the BMKG Semarang, Iis W Harmoko, said that tornadoes occurred due to local heat.

"The current condition is January, the sun is moving north to approach Java Island. There is some potential for cloud formation to be quite high. This tornado occurred because of very local heating, ”said Iis Harmoko when contacted by VOI.

According to him, this tornado was influenced by cumulonimbus clouds. The hot temperature suddenly turns cold because there are clouds moving along with the wind.

"For example, if there is an area where the temperature of the area is warming in the morning, it is getting hot, getting warmer, suddenly turning cold, usually there is a tornado, minimal strong winds," continued Iis Harmoko.
