The Red Card Against Bilbao Was Messi's Biggest Stain
JAKARTA - Roberto Gomez from Radio MARCA believes that the expulsion of Lionel Messi in the Supercopa de Espana final between Barcelona and Athletic Club, Sunday, January 17, night could be a moment that will tarnish his career.
The Argentine received an immediate red card, for the first time as a Barcelona player, just minutes from the end of the match against the Basque side. La Pulga is known to have committed acts of violence.
"This expulsion is the most serious thing that has happened in Messi's career," said Gomez.
"This is not an isolated event, this is the biggest blemish. There are millions of girls and boys in the world who admire Leo Messi.
"The girls and boys will be frustrated after what they saw last night."
Lionel Messi faces serious punishment. In a match that ended in Bilbao's 3-2 win, Messi hit Asier Villalibre late in the second half of extra time.
Referee Jesus Gil Manzano did not see him in person, but after a VAR review he immediately issued a red card for the Argentine.
It remains to be seen how that will be explained in the referee's report, but it will likely be considered a serious offense and, under Article 98 of the rules, that means Messi will face a penalty of at least four games and a maximum of 12.
