Dense smoke billows into the sky from the graded building. Not a few tie the sheets into an emergency rope and escape by climbing out the window.
Emergency workers managed to extinguish the fire, which occurred in the eastern wing of Beijing's Changfeng hospital inpatient department. Reportedly, 71 patients were rescued.
A local government spokesman said 26 of those who died were hospital patients, adding that fires occurred in the housing wing of critically ill patients.
Authorities blocked access to hospitals on Wednesday, announcing an investigation into the incident.
Social media posts about the fire were censored or removed after several hours of circulation on WeChat.
One post is still available to criticize hospitals for boasting about fire preparedness in the February article on WeChat's official account.
