John Mayer Recalls Laporator Doll, Song About Taylor Swift
JAKARTA - John Mayer reflected on his song, Paper Doll, which fans believe tells about Taylor Swift.
The lyrics of the decade-old song were back in the spotlight after Mayer performed the song at a concert in Sacramento, California, on April 8.
On the same day, rumors about Taylor Swift breaking up with her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, surfaced.
When the song was first released, some fans criticized the singer and guitarist for its lyrics and speculated that it was written about Swift after the two separated.
However, Mayer never stated that the song was intended for the Anti-Hero singer.
In a clip recorded on last week's show, Mayer explains that the lyrics "sarcastic" and "bitchy" in the song were misunderstood by fans, and that the song was written from a place of "hurt" rather than anger.
"I'm curious if people don't like it because it sounds a little annoyed. I don't really like'Upset.'... I think it's more 'hitting,'" he told the audience at the Golden 1 Center.
"But is there something about it that's a little bit annoying (bitchy)? There might be," he continued. I try not to enter annoying songs, and that happens sometimes.... I don't think I did well,'sarcasticestery.'
After being released in 2013, fans believe the song was a response to Dear John - a song Swift released in 2010 after their love affair ended.
