Tyson Fury Could Have Retired After The Duel With Oleksandr Usyk On April 29 Was Canceled
JAKARTA Tyson Fury is expected to retire from boxing after negotiations against Oleksandr Usyk hit a stalemate. In fact, this highly anticipated duel is planned to be held next month.
Fury promoter Frank Warren said the possibility one day after news of Fury and Usyk's negotiations officially ended.
"Listen, he may retire. I don't know what he wants to do. He will do whatever he wants to do," Warren said as quoted by Boxing Scene on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Fury, who holds the WBC and Usyk titles who are WBO, WBA, IBF, and IBO champions, is set to enter the ring on April 29. The two dueled for the undisputed heavyweight champion.
However, negotiations protracted because both parties did not meet an agreement on compensation. Fury's demands, which were too much, made Usyk feel unappreciated.
Usyk's strange requests forced the Usyk team to judge Fury as having no strong intention of fighting in the ring. Therefore, they were forced to cancel the negotiation process with the British fighter.
Warren said that the dead end in negotiations with Usyk clearly irritated Fury. The reason is, the King ofTEN has made thorough preparations to fight the champion from Ukraine.
"Tyson is a little (surprised) because obviously he continues to train. He has a coach. This is not a talk (that we haven't done yet). Everything is still too raw at the moment. We will finish it," said the man who is also the boss of Queensberry Promotions.
If Fury actually announced his retirement, this is not the first time he has done this. This Manchester boxer had previously announced hanging up his boxing gloves before returning to the ring.
In 2016, amid issues of drugs and mental health, Fury had announced that he would retire. However, a few hours later, he withdrew the statement.
The following year Fury announced he was leaving the boxing ring again. However, he again fought again in 2018, including against Deontay Wilder.
After that, Fury fought six more times, including two against Wilder for their trilogy. As for the last time he got into the ring against Derek Chisora at the end of last year.
