Windows 11 Users Will Soon Be Able To Set Their Own Default Apps On The Start, Desktop And Taskbar Menu
JAKARTA - Microsoft has just promised to change the way Windows manages applications that open certain files by default, and how users can select applications to the Start, Taskbar or desktop menus.
The new Deep link was introduced by Microsoft, University Resource Identifier (URI), where developers can send users to the correct section of the Settings menu when they want to change the way Windows 11 responds to specific links and file types.
"We will soon introduce a URI link in a new Settings for apps to take their users directly to the appropriate location in Settings for users to change their default," Microsoft said in a blog post.
In addition, the company said it would give users more control over which apps are embedded in their desktop, Start menu, and Taskbar by introducing a new public API.
The API will display a prompt that asks users to grant application permission before appearing in the interface element.
"We will soon introduce a new publicly available API that will allow applications to embed primary or secondary tilings into Taskbar," Microsoft said.
According to The Verge, quoted Monday, March 20, the update can address some of the issues introduced with changes to Windows 11 and changing Windows settings and views are more similar to what users use from iOS or Android mobile devices.
When Windows 11 launched, this operating system had a messy and complicated process to manage the default program.
It is a backward step from Windows 10 that requires users to browse each type of file rather than simply selecting a web browser or image editor you like.
Of course, this has attracted the attention of competing browser makers such as Mozilla, Opera, and Vivaldi.
Microsoft said the two features will first be available for the Windows Insider Dev Channel in the coming months before appearing in a public release on the operating system.
