Ox-eating Tiger Residents In Langkat North Sumatra Are Now Wanted

MEDAN - The North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) set traps for Sumatran tigers in Lau Damak Village, Bahorok District, Langkat Regency. The tigers that have been sought so far often prey on the residents' cattle.

Head of BBKSDA North Sumatra, Hotmauli Sianturi, said the area where the traps were installed was a conflict area between Sumatran tigers and local residents. The Sumatran tiger traps have been laid since Friday, January 8

"At that location, two units of traps were installed for Sumatran tigers, which have been preying on the residents' cattle," he said as quoted by Antara, Monday, January 11 evening.

BBKSDA received a report from KPH 1 Stabat of a Sumatran tiger conflict with Zainuddin's two cattle victims in Selayang Hamlet, Lau Damak Village, Bahorok District, Langkat, North Sumatra.

"The tiger handling was carried out by BBKSDA North Sumatra in collaboration with BBTNGL, FMU Region I Stabat, WCS and YAHUA," he said.

The tigers returned to prey on five cattle belonging to residents in the oil palm plantation area of the late Mahyudin in Batu Katak Hamlet, Batu Jonjong Village, Bahorok District, Langkat Regency.

The incident occurred on Monday, January at 07.05 WIB with the information that tigers had preyed on five cattle.

The incident of tigers preying on ox was first noticed by cattle herder Sadikin (46), a resident of Batu Katak Hamlet, Batu Jonjong Village, Bahorok District. The five bulls consisted of three mothers and two calves belonging to Ucok Peranginangin.

The BBSKDA team intensified patrols in Aras Napal Hamlet, Bukit Mas Village, Langkat Regency to find traces of an incomplete Sumatran tiger in the 234 pal area, on the ground mixed with litter.

"The trail, which consists of three finger prints, is located north of the road network, facing out from the forest. Currently the team has installed camera traps at the site," said Hotmauli.

He said the patrol was working with BBTNGL, FMU Region I Stabat, WCS, and YAHUA.

"According to residents, there were three locations where the tigers were sighted, namely Bukit Batu, Bukit Kuburan, and Bukit Babi," he said.

The tiger again preys on five cows belonging to residents in the oil palm plantation area of Mahyudin (the deceased), in Batu Katak Hamlet, Batu Jonjong Village, Bahorok District, Langkat Regency.
