Washington Mayor Wants To Tighten Safeguards For The Inauguration Of Joe Biden-Kamala Harris

JAKARTA - Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has submitted a request to increase security during the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on January 20.

This request cannot be separated from the riots on Capitol Hill carried out by supporters of President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, January 6, when the US Congress was holding a hearing on the results of the US Presidential Election.

Bowser said, Joe Biden's inauguration requires a different approach than the previous inauguration. This referred to the rioting on Capitol Hill which he described as an unprecedented 'terrorist attack'.

"I will reach out to a variety of local, regional and federal partners to enhance cooperation among our agencies. I strongly urge the US Department of Homeland Security to adapt its approach to inauguration in certain ways," he wrote. Bowser in his letter to Acting Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, told Reuters Monday 11 January.

Layered security

In the letter, Bowser also said the District of Columbia was filing a request for an emergency anticipation announcement, to allow federal assistance.

He also urged the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate with the Department of Justice, Department of Defense, Supreme Court and Congress to establish a federal troop deployment plan for all federal property.

As an illustration, the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States in 2017 was also carried out with super tight security.

Not only the Secret Service and the DC Police are involved. A total of nearly 30,000 security forces were deployed at Trump's inauguration, including thousands of police from various states, members of the National Guard to the FBI.

Barricades to police vehicles and tactical military vehicles were also posted on street corners around Capitol Hill and the White House. Road closures were carried out up to several tens of blocks around the place of the inauguration.

Security was carried out to the waters by involving the Coast Guard (US Coast Guard). Including tunnels and bridges did not escape guard. Chemical and biological radiation attack detection is also carried out.
