Chevron And Pertamina Explore Carbon Capture Technology Development Cooperation
JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) and Chevron New Energies International Pte. Ltd. (Chevron New Energies) signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to study the feasibility of carbon capture storage and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCS/CCUS) in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Present at the signing of the JSA were SVP Research and Technology Pertamina, Oki Muraza, and Chris Powers, VP CCUS for Chevron New Energies. The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif and the Head of SKK Migas, Dwi Soetjipto.
Just so you know, this is the second agreement between Chevron and Pertamina following the collaboration announced in Washington, DC, in May 2022 to explore potential low-carbon business opportunities in Indonesia.
The first agreement was announced at the B20 event in Bali in November 2022 between Chevron New Energies, Pertamina Power Indonesia and Kepel Infrastructure, which aims to explore the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects using renewable energy in Indonesia.
"Pertamina is committed to supporting the Indonesian Government in achieving the net zero emission target by 2060. This agreement with Chevron New Energies is very positive and shows Pertamina's seriousness in following up on the plan for the energy transition and decarbonization program," said SVP Research and Technology Pertamina, Oki Muraza in his statement, Tuesday, March 7.
Present on the same occasion, CCUS Vice President for Chevron New Energies Chris Powers said this agreement could be a momentum to pursue Indonesia's carbon-free targets.
"We have partnered with Indonesia to help meet Indonesia's energy needs for almost a century. This new agreement will build momentum for our common goal, namely advancing Indonesia's energy target while pursuing a carbon-low future. We have a unique ability and an in-depth understanding of Indonesian geology to support the use of CCS/CCUS. Together, we can take advantage of our collective power to open up new opportunities for Indonesia," explained Chris.
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, praised Pertamina and Chevron's efforts to consistently support Indonesia's net zero emissions target by 2060. He also fully supports this collaboration.
Arifin said, CCS/CCUS is a very important initiative for the government's agenda in the decarbonization program. This partnership will contribute to creating a strong foundation to achieve Indonesia's energy transition goals.
"The government has completed harmonization of CCS/CCUS regulations which we hope will be able to encourage the development of more CCS/CCUS projects throughout Indonesia. CCS/CCUS will be a bridge that can guarantee the growth of the Indonesian industry while ensuring that carbon emissions are properly locked," he continued.
