BMKG Predicts Light Rain During Operation Search For Sriwijaya Air SJ-182 Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts light to moderate rain with ocean currents of up to 20 centimeters per second. This weather forecast was issued regarding the continuation of the search for Sriwijaya Air SJ-182 which crashed in the waters of the Thousand Islands on January 11-12, 2021.

"BMKG issued information on weather forecasts and wave heights to support search and rescue operations," said BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto, quoted by Antara, Sunday, January 10.

It is predicted that there will be light rain in the morning, cloudy during the day, light rain at night, and moderate rain in the early morning. The sea wave height is estimated at 0.3 to 1.2 meters with a northeast to southeast surface current at a speed of five to 20 centimeters per second.

On Tuesday, January 12, the forecast is for cloudy mornings to midday, light rain at night, and moderate rain in the early hours. The sea wave height is estimated at 0.3 to 1.3 meters with a northeast to southeastern surface current at a speed of five to 20 centimeters per second.

On these two days, the temperature is estimated to be around 24 to 30 degrees Celsius with a humidity of 75 to 95 percent. Winds are predicted to blow west to northwest at speeds of 10 to 30 kilometers per hour.

The Sriwijaya Air plane registered number PK-CLC SJ 182 for the Jakarta-Pontianak route lost contact on Saturday, January 9, at 14:40 WIB and crashed in the waters of the Thousand Islands between Lancang Island and Laki Island.

The Boeing 737-500 aircraft lost contact at a position 11 nautical miles north of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang after passing an altitude of 11,000 feet and while increasing its altitude at 13,000 feet.

The plane took off from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, at 14:36 WIB. The schedule is delayed from the previous flight schedule at 13.35 WIB. Departure delays due to weather factors.

Based on flight manifest data, the aircraft produced in 1994 carried 62 people consisting of 50 passengers and 12 crew members. Of these, 40 adults, seven children, three babies, while the 12 crew consists of six active crew and six extra crews.
