Landslides Over 7 Houses In Situbondo

SITUBONDO - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Situbondo Regency, East Java, stated that extreme weather in the form of heavy rains and strong winds for the last few days had caused many houses to be flooded and cliffs to collapse, which hit residents' houses.

Situbondo BPBD Chief Executive Sruwi Hartanto in Situbondo, Thursday, said that a landslide occurred in Gung Malang Hamlet, Campoan Village, Mlandingan District on Wednesday (1/3) evening, several hours after heavy rain accompanied the area by strong winds.

A 10-meter high and 40-meter long cliff suddenly collapsed and hit seven houses of residents around the site.

"Thank God there were no fatalities," he said as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, March 2.

He said three out of the seven houses affected by the cliff avalanche were totally damaged, while one house was seriously damaged, one house was moderately damaged, and two houses were slightly damaged.

In Kalisari Village, Banyuglugur District, a 50-meter high cliff also collapsed on the prayer room. In that area, the intensity of rain was high enough to cause cliffs to slide.

"As a result of the landslides in Campoan Village and Kalisari Village, the loss is estimated at around Rp. 180 million," said Sruwi Hartanto.

On Tuesday (28/2) evening, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds caused several rivers to overflow and flood as many as 613 residents' houses in Klatakan Village, Kendit District, Kalimas and Besuki Villages in Besuki District, and Kalianget Village, Banyuglugur District.

The floods also damaged infrastructure, such as overflow and catchment bridges as well as river gabions in Wringinanom and Patemon Villages, Jatibanteng District, while losses amounted to around IDR 2 billion.
