The Results Of The Surya Paloh And AHY Meetings: NasDem-Democrats Reject Closed Proportional Systems

JAKARTA - The General Chairperson (Ketum) of the NasDem Party Surya Paloh met with the Chairman of the Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY). During the meeting, the two agreed to reject the closed proportional system in the 2024 General Election. "We will be at the forefront, NasDem or Democrats are related to issues that continue to be troubling, namely closed or open proportional discourse," AHY said at a press conference with Surya Paloh at the DPP Democrat Office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, February 22.

AHY emphasized that the open proportional electoral system is the best. If Indonesia re-implements a closed proportional, he said, then democracy will experience a setback.

The discourses of a closed proportional electoral system, which is now proportionally open, are the best. If we go back, it means we step back again, "said AHY. According to the son of the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, by imposing a closed proportional proportion, it will indirectly rob the people of their rights. In fact, said AHY, it is the people who have the sovereignty to choose representatives of the people or leaders in this country. Don't let the people's rights be seized. So that the people are forced to buy cats in sacks. We don't know who we will choose," AHY said.

AHY also admitted that he was surprised that the discourse on a closed proportional system was continuing even though the 2024 election stage was already underway. In fact, there is only one year left for simultaneous elections.

"What is even more surprising is when the stages of the election are already underway, getting closer to February 14, how come we are still making it difficult for all of us to prepare for the election," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of NasDem Surya Paloh said that the discussion of today's meeting was no different from the discussion at the Democratic visit to NasDem some time ago. Namely, rejecting the closed proportional system in the 2024 General Election. "Mas AHY has opened a meeting during the day and also should all the results of the discussion on existing discussions on friendly visits, visits to the reply of the Democratic party that was carried out at that time. There is no difference whatsoever from this discussion," said Surya Paloh on the same occasion. Surya Paloh said the two parties had met at the same point regarding the agreement, understanding, views on the electoral system. "Everything is based on the good intentions of the two party institutions. We want to make an optimal contribution to the interests of the nation and state," he said.
