Samsung Will Produce LTPO OLED Screen For IPhone 13

JAKARTA - Samsung is rumored to be the exclusive supplier for Apple's LTPO OLED display panels. The screen panel is planned to be used for the upcoming iPhone 13.

Compiled from the GSM Arena page, Thursday, January 7, the panel will be embedded in two iPhone 13 Pro models with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is known, the LTPO panel itself is claimed to be more power efficient than the LTPS panel.

The main advantage of using an LTPO panel is that it can have an adaptive refresh rate without any additional hardware. Meanwhile, other iPhone 13 series will stick to older LTPS panels like 60Hz for one more year.

However, Apple will no longer use LTPS panels in 2022, because Apple will also use LTPO OLED for all four iPhone 14 models. At the same time, LG must use LG Display as a second source to reduce dependence on Samsung Display.

However, only Samsung has the capacity to meet Apple's quota this year. The South Korean manufacturer plans to produce 60,000 pieces per month on the A3 line in Asan.

By comparison, the LG E6 line in Paju can only issue 5,000 copies per month, although plans to expand to 25,000 before the end of this year.

However, LTPO panels take longer to produce because the technology requires the addition of an oxide layer. This makes them more difficult and also more expensive to produce.

LTPO will allow the screen to run at 120 Hz without turning off the battery. It is known that LTPO OLED was developed by Apple and was first used on the Watch Series 4 (which can press the screen up to 1Hz to save battery).

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will be the first phone to use an LTPO panel and rumors have it that the upcoming Galaxy S21 series will also use the technology.
