Congress Preparing To Hold Session On The Results Of The US Presidential Election, We Collect Important Facts

JAKARTA - The United States Congress will hold a trial on Wednesday, January 6 starting at 18.00 local time or Thursday January 7 at 13.00 WIB on Capitol Hill, Washington DC to determine the results of the US Presidential Election.

According to Reuters, the session which will be attended by a joint member of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate is certain to be tough, because Donald Trump has yet to accept his defeat.

What is being done?

The House of Representatives and the US Senate will officially discuss the electoral college, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence who is also President of the US Senate. A total of 538 electoral votes will be counted.

The voices are from various states and the District of Columbia. Where Joe Biden won 306 votes, while Donald Trump won 232 votes.

How is the process?

Pence will open closed certificates from US states and the District of Columbia certifying their electoral vote. If Pence is absent, his job can be carried out by the longest serving senator in the majority, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers will read the certificate aloud and officially count the votes.

Objections to a state outcome must be made in writing and supported by at least one Senator and one member of the House of Representatives.

If this happens, the joint session is dissolved and each panel will hold two hours of debate and vote on each objection one by one. The majority of each assembly must support the objection to have the electoral vote overturned.

Republicans have suggested they will object in writing to the results of the presidential election in six states.

Can Congress overturn Biden's victory?

If enough electoral votes are canceled, neither Biden nor Trump will have the 270 votes needed to secure the presidency, and Congress will elect the next president.

However, there is almost no chance of that happening. The majority of both chambers need to support objections to the electoral vote being overturned, and Democrats control the House. Even the Senate, which is controlled by the Republican Party, is very unlikely to vote to overturn the vote.

Can Pence win Donald Trump?

Not. Pence's role is ceremonial and he lacks the power to reverse the election results, despite pressure from Trump to do so. If he enforces this, his actions will be challenged in Federal Court.
