The Russian Ambassador Calls There Are Differences Intriguing The Wave Of Earthquake Assistance To Turkey And Syria

JAKARTA - Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Lyudmila Vorobieva saw double standards in providing humanitarian assistance to Turkey and Syria regarding the catastrophic earthquake.

"The response to the tragedy in Turkey is quite uniform, but humanitarian assistance for Syria did not come immediately. The reason is only because Syria is currently being sanctioned," Ambassador Vorobieva said during a press briefing in Jakarta, Wednesday, February 15.

Vorobieva said Western countries were reluctant to send humanitarian aid to Syria citing logistical difficulties and sanctions imposed on Syria.

"How can we talk about sanctions when human lives are in danger. We think there should be no political reason not to send and provide humanitarian assistance to Syria," Vorobieva quipped.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in southern Turkey on February 6.

The earthquake in Turkey was centered in Kahramanmaras and hit nine other provinces, namely Hatay, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Malatya, Adana, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

The earthquake was also felt in several countries and caused widespread damage in northern Syria.

According to Anadolu reports, according to the latest official figures, nearly 32,000 people died in Turkey, while the death toll in Syria reached 3,600.
