Jayapura Earthquake This Morning, Magnitude 4

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4 occurred in Jayapura, Papua.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, 4 km northwest of Jayapura City. The Jayapura earthquake occurred at 04.28 WIB, Friday, February 10.

The earthquake coordinates were at 2.52 South Latitude (LS) and 140.68 East Longitude (BT), with a depth of 7 km.

Earthquake vibrations were felt in Jayapura City on a scale III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI).

The Mercalli scale is a unit for measuring the strength of an earthquake, especially if there is no seismometer at the scene, as quoted from the BMKG website.
