Edinson Cavani Opens Voice Regarding FA Suspension

JAKARTA - Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani received a three-game score penalty from the English Football Association (FA) for a racist Instagram post in November last year.

However, Cavani said that he was not guilty of the upload.

The 33-year-old has been suspended and fined £ 100,000 and orders to undergo face-to-face education on Thursday (local time).

Cavani has "gracias negrito" in Spanish, which means "thank you, negro."

For Uruguayans like Cavani, the nickname "negrito" is plural used to convey intimacy, but it can still lead to interpretations that offend racism.

Cavani himself did not oppose the FA's decision, the Red Devils asked that his fine be used to fund anti-racism projects and initiatives.

Although he accepted the suspension and stressed that he wanted to forget the incident immediately, the Uruguayan made it clear that his posts did not mean anything bad.

"Hello everyone, I do not want to extend this uncomfortable time for me. I want to share with you that I received disciplinary action for knowing that I am foreign to the English language habit, but I do not share my point of view," Cavani wrote on Instagram- quoted by Antara, Friday.

"I apologize when I offend someone with an expression of affection for a friend, I don't mean anything else. Those who know me know that my endeavor is always looking for the simplest joy and friendship!"

"I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. My heart is at peace because I know that I always express myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a heartfelt hug."

Cavani is certain to miss United's matches against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Watford and the club say they are grateful the FA decided to impose a minimum suspension.

"While it is clear that context and intention are key factors, we note that the independent Regulatory Commission is required to impose a suspension of at least three matches," read a club statement.

"The club believes that an independent Regulatory Commission will explain its written reasons that Edinson Cavani is not a racist, nor is there any racist intent with regard to his posts."

United face Villa on Saturday, a win will see them level on points with Liverpool at the top of the English Premier League.
