Sciences Po, Prohibited Use Of ChatGPT Due To Hazards Of Plagiarism And Fraud

Sciences Po, one of the well-known universities in France, has banned the use of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot that can generate coherent prosas, to prevent fraud and plagiarism.

ChatGPT is a free program that produces original text about almost all subjects in response to demand, including articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry, has raised cross-industrial concerns about plagiarism.

The university said on Friday schools had sent emails to all students and faculties announcing a ban on ChatGPT and all other AI-based tools at Sciences Po.

"Without transparent reference, students are prohibited from using software for any writing or presentation production, except for specific course objectives, with the supervision of course leaders," Sciences Po said, although they also did not specify how to track it in use.

ChatGPT has also been banned in several public schools in New York City and Seattle, according to US media reports. Meanwhile, several US universities have announced plans to carry out less assessments of taking home and more handwritten essays and oral exams.

Sciences Po, whose main campus is in Paris, adds that penalties for the use of software can be in the form of exclusion from institutions, or even from France's overall higher education.

"ChatGPT's software raises important questions for educators and researchers around the world, in connection with fraud in general, and in particular plagiarism," he said.

Microsoft Corp last week announced a further billion-dollar investment at OpenAI - an artificial intelligence research laboratory behind ChatGPT - building a bet it made at OpenAI nearly four years ago, when it dedicated $1 billion to startups co-founded by Tesla's Elon Musk and investor Sam Altman.
